30 November - Miles Away UK debut - end of an era
As reported in the news, Miles Away breaks Madonna's unbreakable string of Top 20 hits in the UK. With its #39 peak, it's her lowest-peaking single since the original entry of Borderline didn't go higher than #56. Madonna does keep her string of Top 40 hits, let's hope the next era will not mark an end of that. As there's no more chart activity on the horizon for this project, we suggest visiting the chart runs page for any remaining appearance on the charts. The Hard Candy chart news page is officially closed now, thanx for all the interest!
30 November - Hard Candy drops off US chart
Unfortunately after last weeks's huge gain on the US Billboard 200, Hard Candy now drops off the chart, after 29 weeks, because increasing sales of the whole chart, with the holidays taking place now... It's still going to reach the 700k mark sooner or later.
28 November - More Midweeks update
Not much news on the UK front: Miles Away remained Top 40 on all the Midweeks charts throughout the week. We'll know by Sunday afternoon if Madonna's Top 40 run is broken or not...
25 November - Miles Away on UK Midweeks
We were all expecting something bad, but certainly not such a tragedy: Miles Away comes in at a dismal #38 on the Tuesday UK Midweeks. While we were rooting for her Top 20 string not to be broken, unfortunately now it seems the single won't even break a Top 40, that's truly disappointing...
21 November - Hard Candy outsells American Life in the US Hard Candy is exceeding all expectations! It spends its 29th week on
the Billboard 200 albums chart, registering a 11% increase in sales for a second week in a row. That
shows the Sticky & Sweet Tour is having a very positive impact
on the album sales. In comparison, the US leg of the Confessions Tour only
gained single-digit increases for the Confessions On A Dance Foor album. The
total sales of the album stands at 673,475 as f last week, which means Hard Candy
not only had already doubled the chart life of American Life, it also passed its total
(674,125) somewhere this week! It took Hard Candy less than 7 months to sell what
it took more than 5 years for the 2003 record, which means Hard Candy is certainly
not a flop and sold respectably well for an artist who's been in the music business for 25 years already.
In other news, Miles Away is released today in several European countries and
on Monday in the UK, so expect this page to pick up some activity.
10 October - Hard Candy passes 3 million mark
Even though both the album and its first single fall off the United World Chart this week, Hard Candy still passes the 3 milion milestone after 23 weeks on the world chart. The record is still among the 5 best selling albums of 2008, even if it's neck-to-neck with American Life as her worst selling studio album. The music industry is *that* different now. 4 Minutes spent 28 weeks on the UWC and gathered a grand total of 7,623,000 points. Give It 2 Me, is still on the chart, after 15 weeks and a total of 2,440,000 points.
09 October - Tour impacts on US sales
For the first time in its chart run, Hard Candy registers a sales increase on the Billboard 200.
As the Sticky & Sweet Tour reached the US, the album received a 7% gain and sold 3,575 copies last week. Standing at #182, it's the 23rd week of Hard Candy on the chart and so far it sold 651,127 copies. Next week's chart will likely have a bigger increase as it's the first full week of the tour having an impact. The total sales are only around 20k shy from reaching American Life's grand total, it should happen towards the end of the year.
11 August - UK & US update
In the UK Give It 2 Me falls 13-17, 4 Minutes drops 35-39. The latter one is probably having its last week in the UK Top 40. Hard Candy is holding up well in the UK, still Top 20, slips 16-18 in its 15th week.
In the US, 4 Minutes is having its 20th, final week on the Hot 100, as it will have to be removed from the chart next week, obeying the rules. Hard Candy matches the run of American Life this week as it falls 85-95 in its 14th week.
Since Madonna's chart activity cooled down, we suggest our readers to visit the detalied chart runs page as it's still updated regularly, while this page will have more activity when the tour effect kicks in or a 3rd single starts charting.
03 August - UK update 4 Minutes earns its 20th week on the UK chart (it falls 29-35), entering the elite league of 5 Madonna singles that spent more than 20 weeks on the singles chart. The others were Crazy For You (23 weeks - 2 releases combined), Music (23 weeks), Holiday (28 weeks - 2 releases combined), Hung Up (29 weeks). Give It 2 Me slips 10-13. Hard Candy slips only one place to #16.
While it's only slightly Madonna-related, we'd like to congratulate ABBA whose fantastic greatest hits album 'Gold' is the #1 album this week in the UK. 'Gold' has the honour to be the *only* album to reach #1 in 3 separate years: 1992, 1999 and 2008. Their classic music continues to endure, and of course not long ago, Madonna herself paid homage to their music by sampling 'Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)' (which features on 'Gold') for her 2005 megahit Hung Up. If you're one of the few people who still doesn't own a piece of ABBA, you can easily get Gold here!

29 July - German update
Madonna scores another Top 10 hit in Germany as Give It 2 Me enters the German singles chart at #8. This is fantastic for a second single, in comparison: in the last two decades, only Sorry did better, other second singles like Ray Of Light, Don't Tell Me or Hollywood didn't even crack the Top 20!
27 July - UK update Give It 2 Me falls 3 places to #10 on the UK singles chart, earning a second week in the top 10, thus passing Hollywood in terms of chart run. Hard Candy drops 10-15 and 4 Minutes falls 22-29.
27 July - Australian update Give It 2 Me debuts at a dismal #23 on the Australian singles chart while Hard Candy continues its freefall on the albums chart (32-45 this week). Unfortunately there's not gonna be an Australian leg of the tour so it seems Hard Candy won't have a long chart life there...
26 July - Give It 2 Me #1 on dance chart!
Congratulations to Madonna for her 39th #1 Hot Dance / Club Play hit!
26 July - Belgian update Give It 2 Me seems to be a big hit in Belgium as it jumps to the Top 5 in both regions: 9-4 in Wallonia, 9-3 in Flanders! In Flanders it's Madonna's highest peaking non-lead off single ever!
24 July - US update / Billboard 08/02
Even though the remixes of Give It 2 Me sold 22,073 downloads last week, the single failed to re-enter the Billboard Hot 100. Because of minimal airplay, it seems we have to settle with its initial peak at #57. Hard Candy drops 63-69 in its 12th week and is going to pass 600,000 in hard sales next week. In comparison, American Life was at #139 with total sales of 535,729 in its 12th week on Billboard.

21 July - UK update
As mentioned in the news, Give It 2 Me is Madonna's 61st UK Top 10 hit single. It jumps 10 positions, but it can't get 'closer' enough to the Top 5 though, as there's 'no air' for Madonna there. It sold 19,308 copies, including 6,238 physical singles. If only physical singles would count for the chart, Give It 2 Me would be at #2. But that would mean only the fans buying singles, while with downloads the chart has became more diverse and general public-driven. Even if Give It 2 Me is only the 3rd second single from a Madonna album to miss the Top 5 (with Deeper And Deeper & Take A Bow), it's obviously a bigger hit than something like Hollywood, that debuted and peaked at #2 because Give It 2 Me actually brought new interest for Hard Candy as it jumps to #10, its highest position in 8 weeks! As for the 3rd single? Well, Warner and Madonna will have to give their all, otherwise it would most likely miss the Top 10 since new singles continue to dominate the market and there will be little chance for a later single from an album to reach a good peak...
18 July - Belgian update
Congratulations for Give It 2 Me jumping into the Top 10 in both regions of Belgium, reaching #9 in each!

17 July - UK Midweeks
The Thursday Midweeks update brings us a bit of bad news: Give It 2 Me slips a position to #7 as Ne-Yo overtakes her. Hopefully she can climb back to at least #6 in the weekend. 4 Minutes & Hard Candy remain unchanged.
16 July - US sales update: 4 Minutes passes 2 million!
Congratulations to Madonna who scores her second 2 million seller single in her career as 4 Minutes passes the 2 million mark after nearly 4 months! Hopefully it's gonna be recertified Double Platinum soon so it's gonna be officially her biggest selling single next to Vogue!
16 July - UK Midweeks
Not much news for Madonna in Wednesday's Midweeks. 4 Minutes slips one position but the rest is unchanged. Give It 2 Me looks unlikely to reach the Top 5 at this point, her nearest competition is Jordin Sparks at #5 but still more than 1k copies away. Madonna has also stalled on the iTunes singles chart, been at #15 for days already. The Digital EP is still climbing the album chart though.
15 July - UK Midweeks
In our first UK Midweeks update of the week, we see that Give It 2 Me matches our expectations as it appears at #6! While that might be disappointing for a second single of a Madonna album, we have to remember that the single never entered the Top 10 on iTunes and physical sales can only do so much. But we'll know more in tomorrow's update. Meanwhile, Hard Candy climbs up 2 places and now it's just outside the Top 10, with a bit of luck it might climb there in the weekend. 4 Minutes leaves the Top 20 for the first time since its release nearly 4 months ago!
13 July - UK update
Once again, Madonna claims 2 positions in the Top 20 of the UK singles chart for herself as 4 Minutes comes in at #20 (a massive 17 weeks in the Top 20!) while Give It 2 Me climbs a place to #17. Next week is the big one because Give It 2 Me is out on physical single and is predicted to jump comfortably in the Top 10!
Fantastic news for the album: Hard Candy jumps a whopping 10 places to #14 this week!

07 July - UK Midweeks update
We haven't done UK Midweeks updates lately because there was nothing exciting to report. Until now. Not only 4 Minutes & Give It 2 Me are both in the lower half of the Top 20, but Hard Candy actually climbed back to Top 15! That's fantatic news for Hard Candy, the second single is indeed helping it. In comparison, Hollywood barely had any effect on American Life, it couldn't even bring it back to the Top 30!
06 July - UK update
As announced in the news, Give It 2 Me climbs 25-18 and 4 Minutes falls 14-17 so Madonna occupies 2 consecutive positions in the UK Top 20! Hard Candy unfortunately slips 20-24 this week. Give It 2 Me is released as physical single in a week, so it's definitely going to become another Top 10 smash hit for Madonna!

29 June - UK update Hard Candy successfully jumps back to the Top 20 of the UK albums chart (24-20). 4 Minutes simply does not want to go away as it enjoys its 15th week in the Top 20 (13-14). Give It 2 Me is a non-mover at #25 this week, but expect a big jump on next week's chart as it jumps 13-9 on the Airplay chart and is nearing the Top 10 of iTunes. The physical single is out in 2 weeks. The Immaculate Collection climbed 189-164.

22 June - UK update
Madonna's new single Give It 2 Me soars 36-25 on this week's UK singles chart. The track is A-listed on Radio 1 and it's already in the iTunes Top 20, so the only way is up! 4 Minutes slips 11-13 in its 14th week on the chart. Hard Candy finally stops falling down the album chart and climbs 26-24 this week, which is actually more impressive than it sounds, since 8 new albums debuted above Madonna. Hopefully next week it can jump back to the Top 20! Give It 2 Me soars on the Airplay chart as well, flying 40-13!
The Immaculate Collection fell 178-189.

18 June - US sales update Hard Candy experiences a big drop caused by a sales decline of 28,5% and several high profile debuts on the Billboard 200. Hard Candy falls 14-31 and sells 19,149 copies. Its total is 544,249; only 129k away from the total of American Life. 4 Minutes drops 9-10 on the Hot Digital Songs chart and adds 81,064 copies to its grand total, which is at 1,801,823!
18 June - UK Midweeks + sales update
Finally we got some exact sales from the UK: 4 Minutes sold 10,938 last week and its grand total is 342,518! The second single Give It 2 Me sold 3,926 last week. Hard Candy shfted 9,378 copies last week, it's not-so-grand total is 193,035. This week it's going to pass 200k.
As for Midweeks, 4 Minutes is Top 20, Give It 2 Me has climbed into the Top 30, and for the first time ever, Hard Candy finally started to climb, already inched up five positions from yesterday's Midweeks, and 3 positions up from Sunday's position (#26).
15 June - Give It 2 Me enters the UK Top 40
Even though Give It 2 Me had chart action during he album release week already, now we officially start the Give It 2 Me era as the Neptunes-produced single enters the UK Top 40 this week by downloads alone, at #36. As noted in the news, Give It 2 Me is Madonna's 66th UK Top 40 single. It hasn't actually left the Top 200 since the release of Hard Candy, and it lingered around for 6 weeks before breaking into the Top 40. 4 Minutes leaves the Top 10 after what seem like ages and comes in at #11. Unfortunately Hard Candy experiences another fall, now 4 spots down to #26, so Give It 2 Me really should start to bring the album back to the Top 20 now! The Immaculate Collection fell 126-178.

Hard Candy slips 3 positions in its 6th week on the chart but is still Top 20 (matches Erotica so far, that also had 4 weeks in the Top 10 and 6 weeks in the Top 20) and with a 15% decline it sold 26,925 copies. Its total is 525,100 now. 4 Minutes has been certified Platinum. Its sales total stands at 1,720,759 so in a few weeks it's undoubtedly going to be eligible for a Double Platinum certification! 4 Minutes is Madonna's 5th Platinum single, joins the elite list of Like A Prayer, Vogue, Justify My Love & Music. 4 Minutes adds an unprecedented 11th week to its amazing Top 10 run, which breeds a comparison with another Madonna single: 1994's Secret not only peaked at #3 and spent 11 weeks in the Top 10, but was also the lead-off single of another so-called "urban" flavoured album, and was co-written and co-produced by an in demand black producer as well! But that's very the similarities end: unlike 4 Minutes, which never broke the Top 10 in Airplay (peaked at #11), Secret peaked at #3 in Airplay. What about sales then? Well, 4 Minutes was the best selling single for two non-consecutive weeks and is going to be Madonna's second Double Platinum single. Huge contrast, Secret never entered the Top 10 in sales and peaked at #11. This shows how differently Madonna was treated by record buyers and radio stations in the two eras. It's up for a debate which lead-off single is going to be more remembered...
09 June - UK sales update
While there have been no exact UK Madonna sales for several weeks by now, current estimates for 4 Minutes are 331,000 copies, still being the 5th best selling single of 2008. Hard Candy keeps its title for the 19th biggest album of the year, with estimated sales of 184,000 copies.
08 June - UK update 4 Minutes adds a 12th and most likely final week to its impressive run in the Top 10 as it falls 4-8 this week. Hard Candy experiences a sharp drop (13-22) but Give It 2 Me should be taking effect on next week's charts since the video already premiered on UK TV. 4 Minutes falls out of the Top 10 of the Airplay chart after 10 weeks. Unilke on the singles chart, 4 Minutes never reached #1 there, its peak was #3. Give It 2 Me jumped 171-80, The Immaculate Collection fell 108-126, while Confessions On A Dance Floor left the chart.
06 June - United World Chart update Hard Candy relinquishes the top spot of the United World Chart after 4 weeks to Usher, who makes a stand with 600,000 copies. Madonna's album sold 161k copies last week, and 4 Minutes remains at the top of the singles chart for a 8th consecutive week, passing Sorry, which was the world's #1 single for 7 weeks, but still far behind Hung Up, that dominated this chart for an unbelievable 15 weeks.

4 Minutes ekes out a 10th and most likely final week in the Top 10 (because it lost its airplay bullet). It becomes Madonna's 4th longest running single in the Top 10 (tied with 1994's I'll Remember).

04 June - US sales update
Unfortunately in its 5th week Hard Candy slips out of the Top 10
of the Billboard 200 and with a 18% decrease, it comes in at #11 with sales of 31,791. Next week it's crossing the 500,000 mark! 4 Minutes is holding up well on the Hot Digital Songs chart (at #9), with a 5% drop it sells 99,163 copies. The grand total is 1,632,260!
04 June - UK Midweeks update 4 Minutes slips out of the Top 5 for the first time in ages and comes in at #6 in today's UK Midweeks update. Unfortunately Hard Candy is falling fast and is currently out of the Top 25! Hopefully Give It 2 Me will stop the freefalling of the album as its video was released on iTunes today and airplay should be starting up very soon.
01 June - UK update
As announced in news, 4 Minutes, which is at #4 this week, is now Madonna's longest running single in the Top 10 with 11 weeks. Meanwhile, Hard Candy unfortunately falls 7-13; hopefully Give It 2 Me is going to make an impact soon. On a different note, we'd like to comment on Duffy, who's undoubtedly being the UK's biggest female artist of 2008, whose album never left the Top 10, and has just charted and quite possibly peaked at #3 with her second single (physical+digital) 'Warwick Avenue'. This shows how difficult it is to get a #1 in the UK lately (only lead-off and standalone singles have the pleasure), and it foreshadows the performances of Hard Candy's follow-up singles: it is unlikely for Madonna to score another #1 single with this project, but at least hopefully she can add 2 more Top 10 hits to her impressive catalog!
31 May - Belgian update
Flanders turns out to be the winner region in Belgium as 4 Minutes holds at #1 there for a 6th week while it drops to #2 in Wallonia after 5 weeks at #1. Hard Candy keeps the #3 spot warm in Flanders while it's still #2 in Wallonia for a 5th consecutive week. Give It 2 Me leaves both singles charts.
30 May - United World Chart update
Madonna continutes to dominate the world chart as Hard Candy stays at #1 for a 4th consecutive week with 198k copies sold and 4 Minutes is the biggest single in the world for a seventh week!

29 May - Billboard Hot 100 update 4 Minutes adds another 104k to its total of 1,533,097 downloads and slips 7-8 in its 10th week on the Hot 100. 4 Minutes proves to be Madonna's biggest American hit since Music as it spends a 9th week in the Top 10, a week more than Don't Tell Me. Madonna's longest running Top 10 successes are Take A Bow (15 weeks) & Music (12 weeks).
28 May - US sales update Hard Candy slips 8-9 in its 4th week on the Billboard 200 with a 28% decline in sales, selling 39,000 units. This is the first Madonna album since 2000's Music to spend a month among the Top 10 best selling albums of the USA!
28 May - UK Midweeks 4 Minutes is still doing amazingly in the UK: was at #5 on Tuesday's & Wednesday's Midweeks. Unfortunately the album is less enthusiastic, yesterday it was at #11, now at #13. Let's hope in a few weeks Give It 2 Me is going to shift some more albums!
No exact sales info for last week.
25 May - 4 Minutes spends 10 weeks in UK Top 10 4 Minutes now equals Hung Up as the longest running Madonna single in the UK Top 10 with 10 weeks! It keeps the #3 spot warm and next week it's undoubtely going to break that tie, what a huge hit! Hard Candy slips 5-7 on the album chart this week.
25 May - Australian update Hard Candy falls 4-7 in its 4th week on the Australian Top 50 Albums chart. Meanwhile, 4 Minutes spends another week at #2 behind Gabriella Cilmi, but great news is that now the Madonna & Justin duet is certified Platinum (shipments of 70,000 units)!
24 May - All of Madonna's appearances on May 18th UK chart
24 May - Belgian update 4 Minutes holds at #1 in both Flanders & Wallonia for a 5th week. Hard Candy climbs one position to #3 in Flanders while it stays at #2 in Wallonia for a 4th week already. Give It 2 Me falls 35-45 in Flanders and 28-35 in Wallonia.
24 May - United World Chart update Hard Candy becomes the first album of 2008 to hold the #1 spot on the UWC for 3 consecutive weeks, selling 242k copies this week and having a total of 1,384,000. 4 Minutes is the world's #1 song for the 6th week in a row!

22 May - Madonna still dominates Europe Billboard.biz:
Madonna's Candy Sticks at #1 in Europe
It's another triumphant chart week in Europe for Madonna, who retains leadership of both European Top 100 Albums with Hard Candy (Warner Bros.), for a third week, and Eurochart Hot 100 Singles with 4 Minutes featuring Justin Timberlake, for a fifth.
The album is slipping slightly in several European markets, but spends a third week at #1 in Italy and Denmark, enters at #1 in Greece and climbs back 2-1 in Switzerland. The single rises 2-1 in Holland and Ireland and holds at the top in Greece, Switzerland, Finland and the Belgian regions of Flanders and Wallony. It's also new at #2 in Hungary.
21 May - UK Midweeks + sales update 4 Minutes is holding up amazingly on the UK singles chart, as it's still at #3 on today's UK Midweeks chart. Hard Candy is top 10.
The single moves up to become the 5th best selling of the year with 273,220 copies sold in total (last week it sold 28,021)! We have no exact numbers for last week's Hard Candy sales, it sold around 25k copies, so its estimated total is 150k.
21 May - US album sales update Hard Candy falls to #8 in its 3rd week on the Billboard 200, selling 53,302 copies. Its total now stands at 427,752 copies in the US.
18 May - 4 Minutes no longer #1 in the UK
Madonna's honeymoon ends in the UK as 4 Minutes drops to #3 on the singles chart after spending 4 weeks on the top. It's the 9th week of 4 Minutes in the top 10 of the singles chart. Hard Candy drops 2-5 in its third week on the chart. Give It 2 Me reaches a new peak at #60.
18 May - Australian update
The 3 week reign of 4 Minutes in Australia comes to an end as Gabriella Cilmi pushes Madonna & Justin to #2. Meanwhile, Hard Candy drops 3-4 in its third week on the album chart.
18 May - Belgian update 4 Minutes holds at #1 in both Flanders & Wallonia for a 4th week. Hard Candy slips one position to #4 in Flanders while it stays at #2 in Wallonia for a 3rd consecutive week. Give It 2 Me rises to #35 in Flanders and to #28 in Wallonia.
16 May - 4 Minutes reaches #1 in Ireland
After a massive nine weeks on the Irish chart, 4 Minutes finally takes over the pole position. Congratulations to Madonna who scores her 8th Irish #1!
As you can see, the Irish charts are quite difficult for Madonna to conquer: 4 Minutes is the first single with Madonna as the main artist to reach #1 in Ireland in 19 years!
16 May - United World Chart update 4 Minutes holds onto the top spot for a 5th week with a 1% point decrease to 482k on the United World Chart. At the same time, Hard Candy stays at #1 on the albums chart with a 55% decrease to 340,000 copies. Its worldwide total is 1,142,000 now!

14 May - US sales update 4 Minutes falls 3-5 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart with a 15% decline, moving 127,423 copies. Its seven week total sales are 1,309,490.
After its debut last week, Hard Candy experiences a 66% decline in sales and shifts 94,000 copies in its second week on the chart, falling to #3. Give It 2 Me drops 21-74 on the Hot Digital Songs chart and adds 16,324 downloads for its total.
13 May - UK Midweeks update
Well, take a bow, the show is over, say goodbye: The one month reign of the Madonna/Justin duo is quite possibly coming to an end this week: 4 Minutes comes in at #2 on the week's first Midweeks update, behind Ting Tings. We'd like to accentuate the fact that 4 Minutes is one of Madonna's biggest UK #1s ever, because it stayed at the top for 4 weeks, just like Into The Groove & Vogue! Hard Candy is currently at #4. It's being discussed among fans that 4 Minutes does not exactly make people buy the whole album. Which means we probably have to wait till Give It 2 Me makes an impact to see some considerable sales increase. We also find it noteable that now singles are selling better in the UK, because people are more willing to download a few tracks on iTunes rather than buying the whole CD. The industry is changing, folks, no need to panic over the sales of Hard Candy! ;-)
12 May - Miles Away hits Japan
Fantastic news from Japan: The new tv drama Change premiered today, and its theme song, Madonna's Miles Away shot up to #2 on the Japanese iTunes right away! It's already a bigger success there than 4 Minutes and the album is surely going to have a very successful chart run!
12 May - UK sales update Hard Candy experiences a 68,7% drop in sales in its second week and ends up with less than 4k behind Scooter, with 29,667 units sold. 4 Minutes adds 29,821 more copies to its total and becomes the 6th best selling single of 2008 in the UK with total sales of 245,199 copies! Music Week calls it Madonna's best selling single since 2005's Hung Up, which moved 507,764 copies.
11 May - 4 Minutes #1 for a 4th week in the UK 4 Minutes is now among Madonna's biggest UK hits as it holds the #1 spot for a 4th week! Only Into The Groove & Vogue spent 4 weeks at the top of the UK singles chart among Madonna's 13 #1s!
Unfortunately Hard Candy is pushed to #2 by Scooter, but hopefully the Radio 1 gig will stabilize sales for next week's chart. Give It 2 Me falls 73-93 as it spends its second week on the singles chart as an album track.
10 May - Belgium update Hard Candy slips 2-3 in Flanders and stays at #2 in Wallonia. We're left puzzled why the tour press release claimed that the album had debuted at #1 in Belgium. One possible explanation is that they referred to international albums only, because in Belgium Madonna was kept from the top spot by local acts. Meanwhile, 4 Minutes repeats at #1 for a 3rd week in both Belgian regions. Give It 2 Me enters the Flemish singles chart at #43 and the Walloon singles chart at #31!

08 May - All of Madonna's appearances on May 4th UK chart
08 May - Madonna completes Euro chart double!
From Billboard.biz:
Madonna scores a double victory for Warner Bros. on Billboard's pan-European sales charts, starting a third week at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles with 4 Minutes featuring Justin Timberlake, and climbing 14-1 on European Top 100 Albums with Hard Candy.
The album, Madonna's 11th studio set, racks up no fewer than ten No. 1 debuts around Europe, in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Italy and Holland, and spends a second week at the top in France.
The tally of ten chart-topping entries is one down on the total of 11 achieved in November 2005 by her last studio release, Confessions On A Dance Floor. That had five aggregate weeks at the helm of Top 100 Albums. Warner Bros. says the new album has debuted at No. 1 in 27 countries worldwide, and Madonna has announced that her Sticky & Sweet world tour will kick off in Cardiff, Wales, Aug. 23.
08 May - Madonna takes over Canada
Not only 4 Minutes spends a 6th week at #1 on the Canadian Hot 100, Hard Candy debuts at #1 with 58,000 copies, becoming Madonna's 8th Canadian #1 album.
On top of all that massive success, 3 other new Madonna tracks enter the Canadian Hot 100: #8 Give It 2 Me #82 Beat Goes On #90 Miles Away
Unbelievable that Give It 2 Me, the second single already earned a top 10 place and is the hot shot debut this week!
08 May - Give It 2 Me debuts on Hot 100, outpeaks Sorry Give It 2 Me bows in on the Billboard Hot 100 this week at a cool #57, just based on digital sales (38,654) caused by people picking tracks on iTunes, already outpeaking Sorry, the second single of her previous album by one position! Meanwhile, 4 Minutes slips 4-6 this week.
08 May - Hard Candy debuts at #1 in TWENTY-SEVEN countries!
Madonna proves she's still relevant after being 25 years in the business as her amazing new album Hard Candydebuts at #1 in an incredible 27 countries all around the world! According to a press release, the following countries are:
USA, JAPAN, FRANCE, UK, GERMANY, CANADA, ITALY, AUSTRALIA, THE NETHERLANDS, SOUTH AFRICA, SWEDEN, DENMARK, IRELAND, FINLAND, AUSTRIA, CHILE, SPAIN, MEXICO, HONG KONG, SINGAPORE, SLOVENIA, PORTUGAL, BELGIUM, BRAZIL, SWITZERLAND, ISRAEL and U.A.E
Congratulations to Madonna, we take a bow at her!
07 May - US singles sales update
Bad news: 4 Minutes went against all fan predictions and did not register a considerable rise in sales. In fact it dropped 2-3 on Hot Digital Songs with a 19% decline to 150,170 downloads. The total sales of 4 Minutes stand at an impressive 1,181,900 downloads.
Good news: Other Madonna songs debut among the top 200 digital songs: #21 Give It 2 Me (38,654) #101 Beat Goes On (11,348) #180 Candy Shop (7,578)
Give It 2 Me is going to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.
07 May- US album sales discussion Billboard.biz published a whole article (by Keith Caulfield) dedicated to Madonna on the album charts this week and we think it's a good read and it puts everything into perspective:
Madonna's Hard Candy album makes a sweet entrance at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 280,000, giving the diva her seventh chart-topper and the third biggest sales week of the year. A whopping 26% of the album's first week sales were downloads sold through digital retailers.
Madonna's Hard Candy takes its expected bow atop the Billboard 200 albums chart, giving the queen of pop her seventh No. 1 -- the second-most among all female artists. Only Barbra Streisand, with eight, has more. Candy earns the third biggest sales week of the year as well, with 280,000 sold in its first week. That's a bigger number than the 225,000-250,000 range that Billboard projected last week based on the set's first-day sales figures. (Digital downloads accounted for a whopping 26% -- 73,000 -- of the album's overall first-week, easily making it No. 1 the Top Digital Albums chart.)
Madonna's last studio effort, 2005's Confessions On A Dance Floor started with 350,000 when it bowed at No. 1. However, that discofied album was released on Nov. 15, just as the Christmas shopping season was kicking into high gear, which partially explains its bigger opening. Each of the top seven albums that week on the Billboard 200 sold more than 100,000. Even the No. 2 album, the debuting "Some Hearts" by Carrie Underwood, started with more than 300,000.
So far in 2008, there has yet to be a week that busy. The last time the chart housed seven or more albums that each sold at least 100,000 was -- no surprise -- the sales week ending Dec. 23, 2007, when the top 23 all did more than 100,000. Ho, ho, ho!
For those chart watchers (and diva enthusiasts) who are trying to draw comparisons between Hard Candy's 280,000 bow and Mariah Carey's 463,000 start with her new "E=MC2," hold your horses. During "E=MC2's" release week, Carey pulled out all the stops and performed on "American Idol," "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Good Morning America." During Hard Candy's release week, Madonna did not perform on TV. In fact, she has yet to perform on American TV to promote this album. Last week, the only chat show she visited was BET's "106 and Park" (May 2).
Madonna did, however, stage a well-publicized club show at the Roseland Ballroom in New York on April 30, which was streamed online via MSN. But a club show -- no matter how hot -- can't compare with the impact "American Idol" and Oprah Winfrey has. And, keep in mind that Carey was returning with her first album since her comeback set, "The Emancipation of Mimi," which also happens to be the biggest selling album of 2005.
Besides, with an album loaded with singles that seem ripe for American radio, Hard Candy may have a healthy shelf life. The set was led by the unqualified hit single 4 Minutes (featuring Justin Timberlake). It's her biggest radio hit since 2001's Don't Tell Me and it spent multiple weeks at No. 1 on the Hot Digital Songs chart. Madonna's had a tough time getting her new music heard on U.S. radio in the past six or so years, so securing American airplay with 4 Minutes was key in the promotion of Hard Candy. The diva is in Europe now, focusing on the promotion of the album there. Last night (May 6) she staged her second club show supporting the album, this time at the Olympia Hall in Paris.
Madonna, of course, isn't the only artist to debut on the Billboard 200 this week. A bevy of other acts strut onto the chart, including Lyfe Jennings, the Roots, Def Leppard, Portishead, Mudcrutch and Tim McGraw. And those are just the artists that debut in the top 10 this week. It's the first time the top 10 has greeted seven new entries since the chart dated April 14, 2007.
07 May - Official US sales number
Billboard reports that Madonna leads the Billboard 200 for the seventh time in her career with Hard Candy debuting at the pole position with sales of 280,000 copies!
06 May - US update by HitsDailyDouble
HitsDailyDouble, who compiles an album sales chart every Monday & Tuesday by retail repots, just published their final numbers for last week and they got Madonna's Hard Candy at 282,785 copies. Keep in mind this is just an indication for tomorrow's Soundscan numbers and is *not* official. The actual numbers usually differ at least a bit. Check here tomorrow for official numbers from Billboard.
06 May - UK sales info + Tuesday Midweeks
Madonna's sales are in: last week Hard Candy debuted at #1 with 94,655 copies and 4 Minutes added 38,965 units to its total sales. While the album sales are down compared from her previous effort (Confessions On A Dance Floor sold 217,610 on its debut week) these sales are decent and Madonna is undoubtedly the Queen of UK! We have to remember that album sales are going down, and her previous album was released during a different climate.
As for today's Midweeks update, Madonna is set to repeat her double this weekend, with already having 10k singles sales and 8,3k album sales (yesterday was a bank holiday in the UK, that's why sales are very low).
And to finish this update with personal comment: we consider Madonna's double #1 in the UK as the finest hour in our chart news reporting and Madonna already reached our (very high) expectations and contrary to most of the online Madonna community, we're already satisfied chartwise and any other massive chart news is just a bonus!
05 May - Australia update
No UK sales info yet, because today is a bank holiday for the British, so now we focus on some new Australian info. The first week sales of Hard Candy in Australia were 14,585 copies. Madonna's greatest hits compilation The Immaculate Collection has been recertified for 12x Platinum (that's shipments of 840,000 copies), only 12 more albums have the same or higher certification in Australia.
04 May - Give It 2 Me enters UK chart
Not only Madonna dominates both the albums and singles chart with her current single and album this week, as a bonus, Give It 2 Me enters the singles chart at #73 based on downloads alone!
04 May - Madonna does the double in the UK as well!
Madonna does the UK double for the 4th time in her career, as 4 Minutes remains #1 for a 3rd consecutive week! Incredible!
04 May - Madonna scores 10th #1 album Hard Candy debuts at #1 on the UK albums chart, which means Madonna earns her 10th #1 UK album! Click here to see them all. We'll find out soon if she's getting the double in the UK as well! ;-)
04 May - Madonna does the double in Australia! 4 Minutes holds at #1 for a second week in Australia and Hard Candy debuts at #1, getting Madonna her third double #1 (after 1986 & 1990)! Hard Candy gets a Gold certification for shipments of 35,000 copies and is her 9th Australian #1 album.
03 May - US Hard Candy sales forecast
HitsDailyDouble in their weekend sales prediction reveals that Hard Candy is en route to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 with sales between 270-290k. Hard Candy is going to be Madonna's 7th #1 album, and her 4th consecutive studio album that debuts at #1, because all of her studio albums this decade entered at the top spot.
03 May - Madonna tops Billboard Hot Dance / Club Play chart for the 38th time
Congratulations to Madonna who scores her 38th #1 on the Hot Dance / Club Play chart with 4 Minutes! Click here to see them all!
02 May - Early Hard Candy debut
Madonna's new album debuted on the United World Chart at #17, selling 44k copies. This is because it already charted in France & Sweden. In France it debuted at #1 with 37,693 copies, and that's only 2-day sales! In Sweden it debuted at #1 as well, already getting a Gold certification there (20,000 copies).
02 May - Sixth week of 4 Minutes on Billboard Hot 100: #4 Hot 100 Airplay: #13 Hot Dance / Club Play: #5 Hot Dance Airplay: #3 Pop 100: #3 Pop 100 Airplay: #9 Hot Digital Songs: #2 Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks: #26 Rhythmic Top 40: #28
01 May - UK Midweeks update
Madonna pulled away from her competitors on Wednesday's and Thursday's UK Midweeks updates: now 4 Minutes is 5k ahead of both Wiley & Sam Sparro, a 3rd week on top of the singles chart seems to be a sure bet now. Hard Candy is defintely going to be #1, already sold above 62k copies.
01 May - Billboard Hot 100 update 4 Minutes moves up two positions to #4 this week on the Billboard Hot 100. Next week, it's expected to climb back to the top 3 (and will probably experience its peak).
30 April - 4 Minutes becomes a million seller in the USA + early Hard Candy sales predictions 4 Minutes officially passes the 1 million mark (1,031,730 to be exact) on this week's Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart! It is Madonna's best selling single since 2000's Music, and is on its way to be on par with the double Platinum seller Vogue! Congrats Madonna!
As for Hard Candy, HitsDailyDouble gives a prediction from one day sales: a decent range of 275-300k for the debut sales of Madonna's new album. We'll know the exact number next Wednesday.
29 April - UK Midweeks update
In our most exciting UK Midweek update of the year, we're glad to report that Madonna is atop both the singles and albums chart, she's expected to do the double this Sunday, with being #1 on both charts!
Moreover, one retailer offers some classic Madonna albums as a gift for fans who buy Hard Candy, which means Madonna is going to dominate the album charts this week: The Immaculate Collection & Confessions On A Dance Floor are already top 20, while Ray Of Light & Music are just outside top 40. The latter two albums are going to experience their biggest re-entry in several years!
What a fantastic Madonna week we're having! ;-)
UPDATE: We got the sales as well: 4 Minutes - 11,764 / Hard Candy - 33,003
28 April - UK sales update
Music Week reprises the trivia about Madonna's multiple week #1s and adds the interesting info that Madonna has spent 27 weeks at the top of the UK singles chart already. Only Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Cliff Richard, Frankie Laine and ABBA spent more weeks at #1 (Take That spent 27 weeks as well).
We also get the sales of 4 Minutes: it sold 49,771 copies on its 6th week, and becomes the 9th biggest selling single of 2008, with it's total of 176,413!
27 April - The Immaculate Collection back on chart
Not exactly Hard Candy news, but we can't ignore that Madonna's greatest hits album The Immaculate Collection is back in the UK Top 75 album chart this week, at #72! Should climb higher next week, because of the new album effect! ;-)
27 April - Madonna stays #1 on UK singles chart 4 Minutes effortlessly scores another week at the top of the UK singles chart. Now the track is among her biggest UK hits, those that spent multiple weeks at #1: Into The Groove (4 weeks) Papa Don't Preach (3 weeks) La Isla Bonita (2 weeks) Like A Prayer (3 weeks) Vogue (4 weeks) Hung Up (3 weeks) 4 Minutes (2 weeks so far)
We're crossing our fingers for next week's chart, hopefully Madonna can stretch it to 3 weeks with the album release hype...
27 April - US radio update 4 Minutes finally breaks the milestone of 50 million audience impressions on US radio! 4 Minutes is Madonna's biggest airplay hit since Die Another Day, with becoming a top 10 hit on Pop radio, and top 20 hit on Hot 100 Airplay! Die Another Day peaked at #15 on Hot 100 Airplay and gathered 60 million audience impressions.
27 April - 4 Minutes is the new Australian #1
Congratulations to Madonna & Justin who conquer another country with 4 Minutes: it's the new #1 in Australia, Madonna's 11th chart topper in that country, incredible! Now Madonna is the female artist with most Australian #1s. Second only to her, as in the UK is Kylie Minogue, who has 10.
26 April - Hot Dance / Club Play update 4 Minutes jumps seven places to #5 on next week's Billboard Hot Dance / Club Play chart. The new #1 Madonna club hit is within reach! ;-)
25 April - UK Midweeks update
Madonna is #1 on the Friday UK Midweeks update with 35,025 copies, nearly 15k ahead of Sam Sparro. Madonna is surely going to spend another week at the top of the UK singles chart.
24 April - Madonna saves Belgium!
It didn't take much hesitation for Madonna to save Belgium either: 4 Minutes climbs to #1 in both Flanders and Wallonia, becoming her second joint-number one (after Hung Up). Congratulations!
24 April - Madonna tops the Eurochart Hot 100
Madonna conquers the Eurochart Hot 100 on her fifth week on the chart, congratulations! On the Canadian Hot 100, she holds still at #1, and inches up to the runner-up spot on Canadian airplay.
24 April - Fifth week of 4 Minutes on Billboard Hot 100: #6 Hot 100 Airplay: #16 Hot Dance / Club Play: #12 Hot Dance Airplay: #4 Pop 100: #3 Pop 100 Airplay: #10 Hot Digital Songs: #1 Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks: #29 Rhythmic Top 40: #28
24 April - iTunes update
Madonna's reign on the top of the US & UK iTunes is over, she slips to #2 in both countries.
24 April - UK Midweeks update
Madonna remains #1 on Wednesday's and Thursday's UK Midweeks update as well, but she falls to #2 on iTunes as a new threat emerged in Wiley. Madonna is still going to be #1 this Sunday, but the chances to be #1 for a third week in the UK started to decrease...
24 April - Billboard Hot 100 update 4 Minutes inches up 7-6 this week, not having enough strength to get in the top 5 (which remains unchanged except 'Lollipop' replaces 'Bleeding Love' at #1). Next week it should stay around this position, and then during the album week, it should shoot back to the top 3. Bad news is that Leona Lewis is going to appear on American Idol, and that might cause a spike in the sales of 'Bleeding Love', which might end up as a threat against Madonna... [Leona peformed Thursday night, my info was wrong]
But to stay positive: Madonna has got a top 3 hit, first time in nearly 8 year, it's on course to become one of her best selling singles ever, not to mention she's surely going to get a #1 album. Speaking about that, now Mariah Carey gets back this week to the club of female artists who have 6 #1 albums, which is now a three-way tie with Madonna and Janet Jackson, but in 2 weeks Madonna should step out and get her 7th #1, so she'll be second only to Barbra Streisand (who has 8).
23 April - US sales update
Madonna regains the #1 spot on Hot Digital Songs chart with sales of 201,799 copies. That brings her total to a massive 846,751, a huge hit, which already sold over 200k in 3 separate weeks! Next week it's almost sure to become a million seller! Only 2 other songs sold above 200k in the digital era in 3 separate weeks (Rihanna's 'Umbrella' & Leona Lewis' 'Bleeding Love'). 4 Minutes is predicted to get back to #5 on the Hot 100.
22 April - 4 Minutes is only second best in France
Unfortunately the debut of 4 Minutes in France is less stellar: enters at #2 with sales of 9,225 physical copies (around 1,500 behind Enrique Iglesias). Hopefully the album release can push it to #1!
22 April - UK Midweeks update
It doesn't suprise us to see Madonna at the top of the first UK Midweek update. She's having nearly twice the sales of her nearest competition, she's totally going to rule the singles chart this week. So far her sales are 16,992, while 3 weeks ago her full-week sales were among that range!
21 April - 4 Minutes conquers Germany
After getting her record breaking 13th #1 in the UK, Madonna scores high in Germany as well, where 4 Minutes debuts straight at #1 on the singles chart! What a hit! Madonna's German #1 singles: La Isla Bonita (1987) American Pie (2000) Hung Up (2005) 4 Minutes (2008)
21 April - UK sales update
UK Music Week celebrates Madonna's 13th, with most of our aforementioned chart trivia, and they reveal the sales of 4 Minutes from its 5th week: 40,634! It brings its grand total to 126,642 downloads, which already makes her the 18th best selling single of 2008. The sales number is going to get another big gain next week, as the physical single of 4 Minutes is available in the UK today.
20 April - UK chart trivia
Now that we got that brand new #1 UK smash hit, let's taste some delicious chart trivia! With 13 #1s, Madonna ranks like this in the all-time chart:
1. Elvis Presley (21)
2. The Beatles (17)
3. Westlife (14)
3. Cliff Richard (14)
5. Madonna (13)
6. The Shadows (12)
7. Take That (10) Madonna has the most #1 singles among female artists or groups with female leads. She's the only female artist along with Kylie Minogue who scored #1s in the 80s, 90s and 00s. Among Madonna's #1s, 4 Minutes was the slowest one to reach to the top. It took 5 weeks to get to #1. The second slowest one was La Isla Bonita, which reached #1 on its 4th week (this is because of a different chart climate of course). 4 Minutes is Madonna's 5th #1 this decade. She scored 6 #1s in the 80s, but only managed to top the chart twice in the 90s. 4 Minutes is only the second Madonna single that has a featuring artist and the first one to reach #1. The other one is Me Against The Music, which peaked at #2. 4 Minutes is Madonna's 13th #1 as a songwriter, but while American Pie was a cover, Madonna earned a writer credit for Gary Barlow's version of Love Won't Wait (she has 'additional lyrics' credit for Papa Don't Preach). Even though it took five weeks for 4 Minutes to top the chart, it still enters an elite club of #1 singles: only 7 tracks in total topped the chart with only downloads, before they got their physical release. 4 Minutes is the 1070th track that reached the top of the UK singles chart, but it's only the 4th song that reached #1 in 2008. It's the 3rd #1 that features Justin Timberlake. Previous chart toppers are 'SexyBack' (2006) & 'Give It To Me' (2007). Timbaland had a hand in all three, plus he produced 'Maneater' & 'The Way I Are' as #1s from the past 2 years.
20 April - Madonna tops the UK singles chart!
After 4 weeks in the top 10 already, 4 Minutes finally climbs to the top of the UK singles chart and grabs that well deserved 13th chart-topper for Madonna! Congratulations! Click here to see Madonna's UK #1s! And her reign has just begun: next week Madonna is going to hold onto the top spot for sure!
20 April - Hot Dance + Australia update 4 Minutes does a massive leap of 32-12 in its second week on the Hot Dance / Club Play chart, shaping up to be a huge hit there! Meanwhile, it holds at #3 in Australia, but hopefully it can climb to #1 on next week's chart (the physical single was released yesterday in that country).
18 April - Belgium update
Finally we can report about the chart performance of 4 Minutes from one of our own countries, Belgium! The single debuts at #3 in Flanders and #2 in Wallonia. Hopefully Madonna & Justin can reach the top in both territories soon enough.
18 April - UK Midweeks
In our last UK Midweeks update for this week, we see that Madonna has pulled away from Estelle, now the gap between #1 and #2 is 5011 copies, with Madonna having a massive 27,538 downloads now. A #1 for the official singles charts is very certain now, we'll find out on Sunday.
17 April - Madonna tops United World Chart
Madonna & Justin only needed a 4k point difference to replace Leona Lewis at #1 on the United World Chart! According to to MediaTraffic, 4 Minutes is Madonna's 9th #1 on this chart since 1996. Previously in 2005/2006 Madonna held the #1 spot on the UWC for 22 weeks when she replaced the 15 week reign of her own Hung Up with Sorry and spent an additional 7 weeks there. 4 Minutes is predicted to be a #1 on this chart for a long time.
Meanwhile, Madonna soars 14-2 on the Eurochart Hot 100, only the infectous 'Mercy' by Welsh talent Duffy keeps her from grabbing the top spot. But not for long, we assume.
17 April - Fourth week of 4 Minutes on Billboard Hot 100: #7 Hot 100 Airplay: #27 Hot Dance / Club Play: #32 Hot Dance Airplay: #4 Pop 100: #3 Pop 100 Airplay: #11 Hot Digital Songs: #2 Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks: #35 Rhythmic Top 40: #31
17 April - Canada update
Madonna continues to dominate the Canadian Hot 100, staying at #1 for a third consecutive week. On the Airplay chart, 4 Minutes inches up 4-3.
17 April - UK Midweeks
The gap between Madonna & Estelle grows bigger on Thursday's UK Midweeks update: Madonna is #1 with 20,699 downloads, 2742 copies more than her nearest competition, fantastic news!
16 April - Billboard Hot 100 update
As expected, 4 Minutes falls 3-7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Airplay is still rising and the remixes are surely going to have an effect for next week's charts, so don't panic! ;-)
16 April - UK Midweeks
Madonna comes in at the top of the Wednesday UK Midweeks update! She's at 14,500 downloads now, 500 copies above Estelle, hope the gap is going to get bigger tomorrow!
16 April - US sales update
The American sales are in: a 8% drop from last week, to 198,427. That brings the total of 4 Minutes to an amazing 644,772! Madonna slips a position to #2 on the Hot Digital Songs chart, as the 'Bleeding Love' juggernaut by Leona Lewis replaces her at the top (who's going to have the special privilege of topping both the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 this week), and Madonna is expected to drop a few places on the Hot 100. Nevertheless, her sales are amazing, 4 Minutes is surely going to be one of her biggest selling singles!
15 April - UK Midweeks update & This Day in UK chart history
The first UK Midweeks update is in: Madonna is #2 with 9,386 copies, only 882 downloads behind Estelle's 'American Boy' (who has been the UK #1 single for 4 weeks already)! With just a little bit of luck, 4 Minutes could reach the pole position this Sunday already.
Reporting about the UK Midweeks today gives us the chance to look back to the same report from 5 years ago. On April 15th, 2003, the first Midweeks update of the week was published and Madonna was on top with her then-current lead-off single American Life. The chart climate was much different at that time, singles debuted high and then fell down fast. Madonna was #1 in the Midweeks because of all her fans collecting the single in several formats, but on the official singles chart, it had to settle with being second-best, as a dance track called 'Make Luv' by Room 5 overtook her (even though she was predicted to get her 11th #1 on that week by chart watchers). This song spent its 4th week at the top of the chart, which wasn't that common then as it is now. Madonna's single only managed to sell 32,500 on its first week, and then got quickly off the singles chart.
Fans who got nervous by the flashback story: fear not, 4 Minutes is being an obvious hit in the UK and even if it's only going to jump 4-2 on the singles chart this week, she's definitely going to be #1 on the week after (with the physical release), and she's set to outsell all of her competition by a huge margin! And let's take note of the fact that the Justin duet has been a constant seller for weeks now, which proves that it's loved by the public!
14 April - UK sales update 4 Minutes experienced a 50%+ gain in sales last week in the UK: it sold 26,713, which brings its total to 86,008!
13 April - New peak on UK singles chart 4 Minutes reaches a new peak this week, jumping 8-4! The video is surely helping a lot! Madonna is currently number one on UK iTunes, so hopefully she'll stay in the Top 5 for next week, and then the physical single should make her grab the top spot.
13 April - Madonna debuts on Australian singles chart
For some strange reason, Madonna was allowed to debut on the ARIA singles chart this week with downloads only. It's unknown why only now and not 3 weeks before (it entered the Digital Tracks chart 3 weeks earlier, but sales were not reported, so it wasn't allowed to debut on the singles chart). Anyway, it enters at a great #3, and with the physical release coming in a week, it's expected to go to #1.
12 April - 4 Minutes debuts on Hot Dance / Club Play
With the remixes sent out, the new single finally debuts on the Billboard chart that has been dominated by Madonna for the last 25 years: starting with Holiday & Lucky Star, Madonna gathered a staggering 37 #1s on that chart! 4 Minutes is the hot shot debut of the April 26th issue, entering at #32. The Hot Dance / Club Play chart always leaks well before the rest of Billboard's charts are counted. Let's hope Madonna can make it to #1 quicker than a ray of light! Click here to see Madonna's #1s on the Hot Dance / Club Play chart!
12 April - UK update
On Friday's Midweeks, Madonna still stands at #4, with sales of 17k. She's only 1,5k away from #3 (Sam Sparro) and 2,1k away from #2 (Flo Rida), so anything is possible for tomorrow's official chart, but a new peak is definite now!
10 April - More chart news 4 Minutes holds the top spot on the Canadian Hot 100 while it stays at #14 on the Eurochart Hot 100. On the United World Chart, Madonna has the largest points increase, gathering 334,000 points this week. She ascends one position to #2 (just behind Leona Lewis).
10 April - UK & Italy update
After more than 3 weeks, 4 Minutes finally ascends to the top of UK iTunes! This will definitely ensure a new peak on the singles chart on Sunday. Meanwhile, the track has also been dominating the Italian iTunes since last week, so it debuts #1 on the Fimi singles chart in Italy! Congratulations to Madonna & Justin!
10 April - Third week of 4 Minutes on Billboard Hot 100: #3 Hot 100 Airplay: #30 Hot Dance Airplay: #4 Pop 100: #2 Pop 100 Airplay: #12 Hot Digital Songs: #1 Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks: #35 Rhythmic Top 40: #39
10 April - UK Midweeks
Madonna & Justin are still at #4 on the UK Midweeks today, just like they were on Tuesday and Wednesday. It's looking great for a new peak on the singles chart this Sunday!
09 April - Billboard Hot 100 update
Madonna keeps the #3 spot warm on the Hot 100 as she's the only non-mover in the top 5 this week. Mariah Carey stays at #1, while Usher drops 2-5 but Leona Lewis grabs the runner-up position this week. Madonna's airplay is still growing & her sales are still going strong, so she's bound to spend several more weeks in the top 5. It only comes down to her tough competition if she can go higher than #3...
09 April - USA update 4 Minutes becomes the best selling single of the week in the USA: it sells 216,751 - just 320 downloads less than in its first week, which means it's holding up amazingly! While 4 Minutes tops the Hot Digital Songs chart, it's now predicted that it will stay at #3 on the Hot 100 (we'll know for sure in a few hours). But since Hot 100 is a combination of sales & airplay, so if we solely look at the sales chart, Madonna is #1! Speaking of airplay, Madonna & Justin reach the audience impressions of 40 million today, it's been growing steadily for weeks, keep it up, keep it up!
08 April - UK Midweeks
Madonna is #4 in the Tuesday UK Midweeks chart (while #2 on iTunes), with just above 6000 downloads. Hopefully she'll have the same position on Sunday, reaching a new peak. As for her competition, the current #1 Estelle has been declining week-by-week, so when Madonna has her physical singles released, she should easily top her. The infectous 'Black & Gold' by Sam Sparro was also considered as tough competition, but now he has his physical releases out and is only at #3 in Midweeks...
07 April - More UK stuff
After reporting the new position on the UK singles chart yesterday, now we got the sales of 4 Minutes from its third week: 17,567 downloads. That brings its total to 59,296! People might think the 7-5-8 chart run so far is disappointing, but in fact for a track that was released for downloads on the same day as it was released to radio, it's fantastic. 3 consecutive weeks in the top 10 without the video (which got to heavy rotation on tv channels today) is very promising, shows the track has legs. Madonna is rising on iTunes now, so this Sunday it's possible that we'll get a new peak. The physical single is released in exactly two weeks from today, so on that week Madonna has a great chance to finally top the UK singles chart!
As for airplay, the track slips one position down to #7, but in fact it's still gaining at radio (other tracks had bigger gains). In fact, the airplay chart run of Music looked like this on its first seven weeks: 49-19-8-7-4-2-2 - that was its peak, so 4 Minutes still has plenty of room to grow!
06 April - UK update
Madonna slips to #8 this week on the UK singles chart, but next week she's most likely going to rebound since she's already #4 on iTunes and the video is going to have its tv premiere tomorrow. It's her third consecutive week in the top 10, without a physical release yet!
04 April - iTunes update 4 Minutes by Madonna & Justin reached #1 on Belgian and Italian iTunes as well! Also, it's still going strong at the top of US iTunes while Mariah is experiencing a drop. Next week she's undoubtedly going to rule the Hot Digital Songs, and it might get a new peak on the Hot 100 as well...
03 April - Second week of 4 Minutes on Billboard Hot 100: #3 Hot 100 Airplay: #41 Hot Dance Airplay: #5 Pop 100: #3 Pop 100 Airplay: #15 Hot Digital Songs: #2 Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks: #39
03 April - Madonna conquers Canada
Madonna, on her second week, zooms to the top of the Canadian Hot 100. Here's an article about her massive success: Madonna has done it again. Nielsen SoundScan, the firm that measures actual sales of music in North America, has revealed today that 4 Minutes, the first single from Madonna’s forthcoming album, Hard Candy, has debuted at #1 on the Digital Tracks Sales Chart with the highest one week total sales since the establishment of the chart in 2005. This follows the news a week ago that 4 Minutes became the first single to debut at #1 on the CHR chart in the history of BDS in Canada.
02 April - Madonna #1 on US iTunes!
Just after we got her record breaking 37th Top 10 single today, Madonna ascends to #1 on US iTunes (happened around 8 pm CET), which means her sales won't really experience a big drop next week! Not to mention that the video of 4 Minutes is going to be available as a download in 2 days, and those sales will be counted as well!
02 April - Madonna breaks Elvis Presley's record! Billboard has just announced that Madonna makes chart history as 4 Minutes becomes her all-time record breaking 37th Top 10 hit! Now officially Madonna has the most Top 10 hits in the rock era! Fantastic news, congratulations to Madonna! Billboard was also quick to reveal that 4 Minutes jumps 68-3, becoming Madonna's highest peaking single since 2000's Music! Moreover, with both Mariah & Madonna selling above 200,000 downloads, they also rewrite the digital songs chart history as it's the first time when 2 tracks debut with more than 200,000 on a single week!
02 April - USA digital sales are out!
The digital sales from the US are revealed: Madonna sold a whopping 217,071 downloads last week, which rockets her to #2 on the Hot Digital Snogs chart. Unfortunately she sold nearly 70k less than Mariah Carey, who now broke the biggest one week download sales record...
The Hot 100 will be revealed later today.
01 April - USA radio update
Even though the Mediabase site lists Madonna at 31,628 million audience impressions, botoxic @ PulseMusic reveals that with the afternoon update, 4 Minutes actually matches the peak of Hung Up, now at 33,367 million! It took 15 days for the Madonna/Justin duet to reach that number, while the ABBA sampling song reached that in 48 days! Madonna & Justin are surpassing What It Feels Like For A Girl as well, which means if we only take airplay into consideration, 4 Minutes is Madonna's biggest American hit since Die Another Day! Only one day left to find out the exact position of 4 Minutes on the Billboard Hot 100, but don't be shocked if Madonna is going to break a certain chart record, set by Elvis Presley a long time ago...
01 April - UK updates 4 Minutes slips 1 position to #5 on iTunes and on the Tuesday Midweeks, it also slips down from the top 5. Its position on the singles chart is unpredictable at this point, because the iTunes video premiere is expected to give a bump, so Madonna could actually stay in the top 5. Her sales of last week were just 2% down from her first week, selling 20,623 in her second week.
30 March - 4 Minutes enters UK Top 5!
Up 2 places from last week, Madonna climbs to #5 from #7 on the official UK chart! Now all of Madonna's lead-off singles (of studio albums) reached the top 5 since the first album, with 4 Minutes currently matching the peak of 1994's Secret. The rest of her lead-off singles reached the Top 3 in fact. Let's hope she can reach #1 with the physical release out in 3 weeks!
30 March - Australian update 4 Minutes debuts at #3 on the Australian Top 40 Digital Track Chart. It seems Warner did not report the exact sales so the track was unable to debut on the Top 50 Singles Chart. It will debut only when the physical single is released (one week before the album). Let's hope she can get a #1 that way!
29 March - iTunes update
The new single is now available on Spanish & Portuguese iTunes as well and it already topped the chart of the former country. It's #1 as well in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland & The Netherlands, #2 in Germany & USA, #3 in Austria & New Zealand, #4 in the UK and #5 in Ireland at the moment. It's still not available in Belgium, Greece, Italy & Luxembourg, but probably by Monday it's going to be available everywhere. Since 4 Minutes hit the top 5 on every iTunes chart (except Japan where it's a bit lower), from now on we are going to focus on the US & UK iTunes only (with mentioning the peaks of the countries where it's released only next week), reason for that is Madonna & Justin being a worldwide download smash already which needs no additional commentary! ;-) The album is top 10 everywhere, fantastic for a pre-order.
There's still room for improvement in the UK, tomorrow we'll find out the second week position on the singles chart. Unfortunately the physical release is confirmed for April 21st, so we're still ahead of 3 download-only weeks, so we can only hope 4 Minutes does not lose momentum...
28 March - UK Midweeks + US info
No change since yesterday, Madonna is still #5 in the UK Midweeks. As for the USA, Madonna is still going strong on iTunes and now her audience impressions on US radio are 27,908 million with 4339 spins. 4 Minutes officially passed the peak of American Life, next should be Hung Up & What It Feels Like For A Girl!
28 March - United World Chart + Eurochart
Madonna debuts at #36 on the United World Chart and at #23 on the Eurochart. Meanwhile it hits #1 in another Scandinavian country, Denmark!
27 March - Madonna's 53rd chart entry
Fred Bronson of Billboard posted an article about 4 Minutes in his Chart Beat column, mentioning that it's Madonna's 53rd Hot 100 entry. Click here to read it.
27 March - Page of detailed chart runs launched
On the note of Madonna debuting on Billboard, we've just launched our page of detailed chart runs of Madonna's current and upcoming appearances in some of the most important music charts. Click here to check it out.
27 March - More Billboard chart positions
The rest of Madonna's positions on various Billboard charts are revealed:
All of them are new entries, and all of them are actually stronger debuts than Madonna's previous lead-off single, Hung Up had. Hot 100: #68 Hot 100 Airplay: #51 Hot Dance Airplay: #5 Pop 100: #32 Pop 100 Airplay: #22 Hot Digital Songs: #113
27 March - Scandinavia update 4 Minutes continues to dominate Scandinavian iTunes, plus it reportedly debuts at #5 in Sweden and #1 in Norway! Meanwhile, the single has been added to German iTunes at last. Countries like Belgium, Italy & Spain still only have the album added. Strangely, Hard Candy is not yet available for pre-order on the Australian iTunes.
27 March - UK Midweeks + US iTunes
Madonna comes in at #5 on Thursday UK Midweeks. Seems this will be her highest position this week, hopefully she'll hold onto to that on Sunday as well. Meanwhile, on US iTunes, Madonna is #2 on both the songs and the album charts, fantastic!
27 March - Madonna debuts on the Billboard Hot 100
News just in that Madonna debuts at a very decent #68 on the Billboard Hot 100. This high position wasn't expected by most chart experts, and of course next week a jump around 60 positions is expected. More positions from other Billboard charts to follow later.
26 March - Madonna shatters records in Canada
This one speaks for itself: 4 Minutes is the fastest single to hit #1 in Canadian radio history
Broadcast Data Services (BDS), the company that monitors airplay in North America has confirmed that 4 Minutes, the first single from Madonna's forthcoming album Hard Candy, has debuted at #1 on the Canadian CHR Audience chart. This marks the first time any single has entered at the top of either CHR chart in BDS history. 4 Minutes was co-written by Madonna, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. Timberlake also co-produced the track with Timbaland and performs vocals with Madonna.
The song also entered the CHR spins chart at #5, only the second song ever to debut in the Top 10 on that chart. 4 Minutes also entered the All Format Audience chart at #2, the highest debut in the chart's history. Hard Candy will be released in North America on Tuesday, April 29, 2008. The album features Justin Timberlake on multiple tracks and production by Pharrell Williams, Timbaland and Nate "Danja" Hills. 4 Minutes is currently the #1 selling single on iTunes while Hard Candy has the distinction of being the current best selling album on iTunes based strictly on pre-orders.
26 March - USA iTunes success! 4 Minutes continues to be an all around amazing success, because it's now at #3 and #24 on USA iTunes now. If she keeps it up, expect a huge leap on the Billboard Hot 100 next week. Only Mariah & Leona are higher than Madonna on iTunes, but they had much more promo going on lately. Madonna's debut on the Hot 100 is going to be revealed soon. Just to add more great info, Madonna's new single is #1 on Amazon, and it actually registers an early debut on Hot Digital Songs at #113 with 12523 downloads, probably because of an exclusive mobile phone download deal from last week. On top of this massive success, Hard Candy is #2 on US iTunes albums now!
26 March - Wednesday UK Midweeks
Madonna slips to #5 on today's UK Midweeks, but on iTunes she actually overtakes Duffy and rises to #4, so tomorrow she should be higher, and the chances of a top 5 position this Sunday are getting higher by the day. Yesterday's Midweek sales were 5700 downloads.
26 March - US iTunes update
After one day, 4 Minutes is present with 3 entries on the US iTunes Top 100: at #10, #33 and #97, which is great! Next week she's going to have a big jump on the Hot 100.
25 March - US radio update
While Madonna's gains (as expected) slowed down at US radio, news is that she's going to debut at #60 on the Hot 100 Airplay (Hung Up debuted at #73 in 2005). And a nice summary from Radio & Records: Also notable is the return of Madonna, who clocks in at No. 23 on CHR/Top 40 with 4 Minutes (Warner Bros.), her record-tying 26th chart hit (and first in two years). The preview single from Hard Candy, due April 29, matches the format mark for most charted titles set by Mariah Carey just five weeks ago with "Touch My Body" (IDJMG). "4 Minutes," featuring Justin Timberlake, who inducted Madonna into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this month, also takes Most Increased Plays (up 2,147, the format's best gain in more than three years) and is the list's highest arrival since Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man" roared in at No. 21 in June 2006.
25 March - More iTunes 4 Minutes is at #37 on the American iTunes now, steadily going up! Meanwhile, the iTunes pre-orders of Hard Candy are a big success as well, Madonna is already #1 on the iTunes albums of Belgium, Canada & Spain and is not far from the top in France & Germany either.
25 March - iTunes update
Congrats to Madonna & Justin who just reached #1 on the Australian iTunes! Expect a high debut for them on Saturday on the Australian singles chart. Meanwhile, 4 Minutes slips to #5 on UK iTunes because Flo Rida's track is hyped up this week (with a physical release) and Sam Sparro's track is shaping up to be a hit as well. Madonna can still end up having higher sales than last week, though the video premiere could really help a lot now... She continues her reign in France & Scandinavia though. In the USA, Canada & The Netherlands, 4 minutes is expected to start climbing soon.
25 March - UK Midweeks + sales
The first day of UK Midweeks are in: Madonna is up to #4 now, hopefully she can stay in the top 5 till Sunday! Also, we got the official sales figures for the first week of 4 Minutes: it sold 21,106 downloads. In fact, she was less than 2000 copies away from Nickelback at #5...
24 March - iTunes update
While in the UK Madonna & Justin comfortably sit at #3 on iTunes, they shot up to the same place in Australia as well! In other iTunes news, tomorrow 4 Minutes is going to be available everywhere, look out for US updates!
24 March - US radio update
Sunday's numbers are in: 24,528 million audience impressions and 3320 spins, #23 on pop radio! It's very close to the audience peaks of the two previous lead-off singles now.
23 March - US radio update
Another huge jump among the US audience impressions: now at 21,316 million with 2825 spins, entering the top 30 of pop radio! 4 Minutes will possibly debut around the 50s of Hot 100 Airplay next week.
23 March - 60th UK Top 10!
Finally, Madonna has just earned her 60th UK Top 10 hit as her duet with Justin Timberlake 4 Minutes enters the UK singles chart at #7 . Counting the two re-releases, all except 5 Madonna singles reached the UK Top 10 (namely Lucky Star, Take A Bow, Oh Father, One More Chance & Love Profusion). Hopefully the song will climb to a higher position in the upcoming weeks!
23 March - UK Airplay
While we're anxiously waiting to find out where 4 Minutes is going to debut in the UK, news just in that the duet is a new entry at #19 on the UK Airplay chart, a very cool start!
22 March - US radio update
Today, Madonna & Justin are at 17,341 million audience impressions with 2236 spins, having the biggest bullet at pop radio. 4 Minutes is expected to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 next week (which is revealed on Thursday).
22 March - 4 Minutes tops French iTunes
In less than a day, Madonna reaches #1 on iTunes France, fantastic! Meanwhile, Duffy pushes Madonna to #3 in the UK, but Madonna is expected to have a top 5 debut on the singles chart tomorrow.
22 March - 4 Minutes in France + Billboard discussion 4 Minutes has just been released to French iTunes and it's already in the top 10! Meanwhile, Keith Caulfield discusses the first few days of 4 Minutes on US radio. Click here to read it.
21 March - Friday update
While in Ireland, 4 Minutes scored an early debut (with just 2 days of downloads) at #33, in the US radio stations it keeps rising, now at 13,762 million audience impressions and 1734 spins. We probably won't have any more UK midweek updates, so we'll find out the official chart position on Sunday evening.
20 March - Thursday UK update 4 Minutes is still sitting at #2 on UK iTunes. While it won't reach the top spot this week, in the midweeks singles chart it broke the top 10, so Madonna is about to get her 60th Top 10 hit in the UK!
19 March - Wednesday update
In the Wednesday UK Midweeks, Madonna is top 15. This summary probably does not include the fact that 4 Minutes now is #2 on UK iTunes which means a top 5 debut at the singles chart is very likely. Meanwhile, the single topped the iTunes charts of Denmark & is the runner-up in Sweden! Lastly, the US radio impressions are now 7,292 million with 802 spins, so it's been gaining well!
18 March - US radio impressions
Yesterday 4 Minutes racked up 413 spins and 4,113 million audience impressions in America, which is very promising, considering its official radio add date is today. If it keeps going up well, a debut on the Billboard Hot 100 is a sure thing next week.
18 March - 4 Minutes burns up UK iTunes
Just 15 hours after the release and only ONE day of airplay, 4 Minutes is already #8 on UK iTunes, shaping up to be a massive hit there!
18 March - 4 Minutes on UK iTunes
The single 4 Minutes is now available on the UK version of iTunes. After only 12 hours, it already jumped to #19 so it's expected to be among tomorrow's midweeks reports. By Sunday, a top 40 debut on the singles chart seems to be possible.
