The lead-off single from the album MDNA, featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., was released as a digital single on February 3, 2012. The worldwide radio and video premiere followed the same day. The cheerleader track seems to have been written specifically for its performance during the halftime show of the Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5th at the Lucas Oil Stadium of Indianapolis.
A demo version of the song leaked online in November 2011. A few weeks later, a Spanish fan was arrested for the leak (though he was released soon after). The final version turned out quite similar, except for added vocals by Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.
The track became Madonna's record-extending 38th US Top 10 hit, peaking at #10 after a full week of sales boosted by the Super Bowl performance. It received a Digital Gold certificate in the US as well. The single topped the charts at #1 in Canada, Finland and Hungary, while scoring a #2 in Italy and Spain, and #3 in France and Japan. In Australia and the UK, it stalled at respectively #25 and #37.
The Deluxe Edition of the album includes the Party Rock Remix, created by, and with additional vocals of the group LMFAO, who also joined Madonna at the Super Bowl halftime show.
Video
The video, which was directed by Megaforce early December 2011, features Madonna with her bad girls Nicki Minaj and M.I.A in a cheerleader/football theme inspired by the Super Bowl. No matter how many people appear in the video, there's clearly only one star in the spotlights. The football players fight for her attention by filling puddles with their jackets as she walks by, and taking bullets from a machine gun for her. Madonna reminds us both of a sexy Bond girl as well as her own Marilyn Monroe persona from the Material Girl video. The video premiered on Madonna's YouTube channel on February 3rd and received 1,5 million views that same day.
Tour
For the MDNA Tour performance of this song, Madonna opts for a complete attack on the senses. While Moment Factory delivered backdrops, highlighting parts of the lyrics, Madonna is flanked by her cheerleader girls throughout the performance, which is set to the Just Blaze remix. The male dancers strap on drumsets, flocking the main stage, the catwalk, and some are even suspended from the ceiling. During the M.I.A breakdown, Madonna and the girls go down to an impressive choreography together, while the boys get their turn showing off at the end of the song.
