2011 Year Review

31 Dec. 2011

We're only a few hours away from the new year. After two quiet years, 2012 promises to be a very exciting year for Madonna fans. Soon we'll hear the new single Gimme All Your Luvin', which will be performed for a huge worldwide audience at the Super Bowl on Feb. 5th. A few weeks later, we'll get the new album, which is produced by Martin Solveig and William Orbit. And finally, around that same time, we can expect the official announcement of Madonna's new tour for 2012!

Madonna and Lola at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party 2011 Madonna at Oprah's farewell show Madonna and Guy at the MET Ball in NYC Madonna in Venice Madonna at the premiere of W.E. in Venice Madonna at the Toronto International Film Festival Madonna at the BFI Film Festival Madonna at the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project Madonna at the premiere of W.E. in NYC

But let's see what 2011 had in store for us.

Movie

The past few months, Madonna spend most of her time working on W.E., her first directorial effort since the short film Filth & Wisdom. Post-production isn't finished to make the Cannes Film Festival, but instead the flic debuts in September at the Venice Film Festival. The Film Festival of Toronto and the BFI in London follow suit, each presenting Madonna in a wonderful outfit. But reviews are divided once again, and critics as usual don't make life easy for Madonna. The movie gets a limited release in some US theatres, in order to be in time for the award season. A wider release is planned for 2012. The Golden Globes recognize the movie's soundtrack with a nomination, as well as Madonna's song from it, Masterpiece. Her directorial efforts, however, are'nt rewarded. The Oscar nominations neglect the movie completely.

Most of 2011's public appearances and interviews were in regard of promoting the movie. One of the most memorable moments was the press conference where a fan gives Madonna a flower and Madonna disses the guy for not knowing she hates hydrangeas, not knowing her microphone is still open. After the press spread it all over their pages as a big scandal, Madonna takes the piss in the following video.

Ventures

Madonna plays out her business skills ever more. The Material Girl fashion line is a success, and daughter Lola continues to overview the activities of the label. Kelly Osbourne remains the face of the line until the fall of 2011, when a contest starts to search for a new face. In the summer, the line is also extended with a range of nail polish, lipgloss, body sprays and lotions.

It was also in 2011 that Madonna finally announced her own fragrance 'Truth Or Dare', which is expected to hit stores next year.

Meanwhile, a second Hard Candy Fitness Center opened its doors in Moscow in December. A third center within the chain is announced for St. Petersburg.

Tour

Madonna did no live performances in 2011. But we know she'll make it up to us with a brand new tour in 2012. The best clue we got in the past year for this tour, was the Smirnoff Exchange Project, which promised the best dancer a ticket to join Madonna on her next world tour. In November, during the finale at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC, Madonna selected Lil' Buck as an asset for her new dance troup.

Music

And yes, on July 4th, Guy Oseary tweets the news we've been waiting for since such a long time: "It's official.. Madonna's 1st day in the recording studio for the new album... Very exciting!" In the weeks and months that followed, we heard more rumours than official announcements, but what we know is that Madonna worked on the album with producers Martin Solveig and William Orbit. Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. will also feature on some new songs. The first single Gimme All Your Luvin' leaks online in November, but it remains unclear whether it's the final version or not. A few weeks after, a Spanish fan is arrested for the leak. Seems this time, Madonna's management is taking the leaking very seriously.

Other song titles are rumoured, but apart from Gimme All Your Luvin' and Masterpiece, none are confirmed.

Mad-Eyes wishes everyone a happy turn-over! See you all in 2012!

More rumoured song titles

23 Dec. 2011

We have some more information on Turn Up The Radio, the track we heard about yesterday. Apparently, Martin Solveig recorded this song with vocals by Sunday Girl (listen here). Although this fun dance track was rumoured as a single, it got cut from his last album. Now we know why: the song was given to Madonna instead, and it seems she's made her own version for the new album.

Today, fansites Madonnarama and Madonnatribe are reporting another song title: Birthday Song is a catchy pop song, produced by William Orbit.

Cleavage Alert! Check out Madonna's new Truth or Dare fragrance ad

Source: E Online - 23 Dec. 2011

Just...a little...lower.

Madonna's latest ad for her new fragrance Truth or Dare makes us wonder if someone triple-dog-dared her to fully show off her not-so-little isla bonitas, because it's pretty darn close.

But sorry, no wardrobe malfunctions here.

Ad for Truth or Dare fragrance

The black-and-white ad features the singer looking quite glamorous as she gazes—what feels like—deep into our soul. And then you realize that's also her face next to her.

What's going on there?

At first you think it might be some sort of reflection shot, but clearly, the facial expression on Madonna's right shot doesn't match because her eye is closed and her mouth is doing some sort of smirk. Are we the only ones kinda creeped out by it?

Hey, maybe one side conveys truth and the other dare? That would be some serious marketing.

News on new album tracks

22 Dec. 2011

According to fansite Madonnarama, there's a song on the new album called Turn Up The Radio, produced by Martin Solveig.

"The track is already being considered as a second or third single release for the album.
It's an uptempo dance-pop song that could get numerous amazing remix treatments and become a massive hit in clubs and in the charts."

Fansite DrownedMadonna reported a track Trust, a ballad that was supposedly co-written by Sia. However, that singer denied this news on her Twitter account:

"Sadly none of my submissions made the new Madonna record. 'Trust' if it exists, was not written by me. Rumor!"

Finally, DrownedMadonna claims that the first single Gimme All Your Luvin' will be remixed by William Orbit, Benni Benassi and... Stuart Price!

Spaniard arrested in "Madonnaleaks" case

Source: Reuters - 22 Dec. 2011

Spanish police arrested a 31-year-old man Wednesday and charged him with illegally leaking an early recording of a new Madonna song on the internet.

At least one demo recording of Give Me All Your Love was posted on the web in November, two months before the planned release of Madonna's first new album since 2008's Hard Candy.

Police did not give the name of the man arrested in the city of Zaragoza in northern Spain, but said his initials were J.M.R. and that he was a big Madonna fan. He was charged and released, a police statement said.

The "Madonnaleaks" investigation began after lawyers for the singer -- who said in November that she was very upset over the leak -- traced the posting to Spain. Police said they found recordings of the song in a search of the suspect's belongings.

Intellectual property watchdgos have targeted Spain as one of the world's largest copyright violators. The Socialist government, which left office this week, prepared a bill aimed at shutting down file-sharing web sites providing copyrighted material. But the law was never sent to Parliament.

Kelly Osbourne sad she's no longer Material Girl

Source: BigPondNews - 18 Dec. 2011

Kelly Osbourne is 'sad' she is no longer the face of Madonna's Material Girl clothing range.

The 'Fashion Police' star - who replaced Taylor Momsen as the ambassador of the brand earlier this year - is upset she has to leave but is looking forward to helping Madonna and her 15-year-old daughter Lourdes choose a new girl.

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly said: 'I'm sad, but I'm really excited to help pick the next girl and that I got to be a part of this process.'

Lourdes added: 'Kelly was at every audition. I was only at one and I did the online stuff. It was difficult because we only get photos and resumes.'

Kelly says it was inspiring seeing all the girls audition in New York and knows whoever wins the contract is extremely lucky.

She told People magazine: 'They get on stage in the middle of Macy's on a microphone in front of the mall. It's really intimidating - really scary. But it gave me faith in the female kind again seeing these awesome young girls on stage spilling their guts. One girl drove 20 hours!

'I can't even tell you what it's done for my confidence. To be a face of a fashion line? I'm not even a model citizen.'

Kelly will officially hand over to the next girl in February but is hoping to still be involved with the brand.

She said: 'I am going to the first photo shoot with the girls.'

Lourdes added: 'Of course she'll be involved. We're pallies. We're pals.'

Madonna prays for Molly Meldrum

Source: Perth Now - 18 Dec. 2011

Madonna is praying constantly for Molly Meldrum as the rock guru remains in a coma.

"He is a one and only," Madonna told News Ltd. "I've always adored Molly and I'm praying around the clock." She said Meldrum had been an inspiration throughout her career.

Molly Meldrum

As Meldrum rests in intensive care in Melbourne's The Alfred hospital, still listed as critical, popular singer Michael Buble added his heartfelt best wishes to a global outpouring of support. Crooner Buble urged his friend to "fight back" from his injuries.

"I was devastated to hear about Molly's accident," he said. "My family and I are praying for him."

It is understood Madonna, Buble and Cher have sent flowers to Meldrum.

Cartier designs W.E. bracelet for M

Source: ContactMusic - 18 Dec. 2011

Madonna landed a one-of-a-kind bracelet after begging Cartier bosses to give her the jewellery they designed for Andrea Riseborough to wear as Wallis Simpson in the pop star's directorial debut W.E.

The True Blue singer has restyled herself based on the fashions in the film - and she fell in love with one piece jewellers made for her leading lady.

Madonna on Anderson Cooper

She says, "After the film was over I asked them to give me the bracelet they made for Andrea and they said no; see not everyone says yes to me! And so they made me this one instead."

And it seems that Madonna's interest in Simpson - the American socialite who prompted King Edward Viii to abdicate the throne of England in 1936 - has given the clothiers who styled the historical figure a new lease of life.

Madonna is now benefiting from their period designs: "I have been wearing Vionnet, who made a lot of the Duchess' (Simpson) dresses and they're a couture house that closed down for many years and they're sort of redoing their shop. They made a lot of Andrea's costumes for the film."

Album in March; first single end of January, retitled Gimme All Your Luvin'

Source: Hollywood Reporter; official press release - 15 Dec. 2011

Madonna's new album is finished and will be released in March 2012 on Interscope Records, the label and Live Nation Entertainment are expected to announce on Thursday morning.

In 2007, Live Nation signed the superstar to a 10-year deal reportedly worth $100 million -- this portion of the commitment is being valued at $40 million, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The Universal Music Group-owned label will release three albums by the Material Girl. Her first single, called “Gimme All Your Luvin,” is due out the last week in January (a demo of the song leaked in early November) just ahead of Madonna's halftime performance at the Super Bowl on Feb. 5. Two days earlier, the film W.E., which Madonna directed and co-wrote, is scheduled to hit theaters.

The as-yet-untitled album is her first in five years. Madonna had been signed to Warner Bros. since 1982. Van Halen , another Warners act, also recently signed with Interscope, adding to an increasingly healthy stable of rock and pop artists who launched their careers in the 80s, which includes U2. Lady Gaga , who is often compared to Madonna, is also on the Interscope roster.

The multi-faceted "360" deal includes studio albums, touring, merchandising, fan club/website, DVD's, music-related television and film projects and associated sponsorship agreements.

“We anticipate a very bright future at our new home,” says Madonna's longtime manager Guy Oseary in a statement being issued Dec. 15. Adds Jimmy Iovine, Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M: "Very rarely does an opportunity like this come around. We would like to thank Madonna, Guy and Live Nation for their belief in us."

Masterpiece nominated for Golden Globe!

Source: Hollywood Reporter - 15 Dec. 2011

Exciting news! Even though the song hasn't been released yet, Masterpiece has been nominated for a Golden Globe! This is possible because the movie W.E. already has been released so the soundtrack is also in the running.

The nominees for the Golden Globe Awards were announced by Sofia Vergara, Gerarad Butler, Rashida Jones and Woody Harrelson on the morning of Dec. 15.

Original song for motion picture nominees include "Hello Hello" from Gnomeo and Juliet, "The Keeper" from Machine Gun Preacher, "Lay My Head Down" from Albert Nobbs , "The Living Proof" from The Help and "Masterpiece" from W.E.

The movie soundtrack by Abel Korzeniowski is also nominated in the category Best Original Score. However, the movie itself, the performance s of the actors and of Madonna as a director are not getting any recognition from the nominations committee.

The Golden Globes will be broadcast live on NBC coast-to-coast Jan. 15, 2012 with returning host Ricky Gervais. Morgan Freeman will receive the Cecille DeMille Award.

Rumoured tour dates

15 Dec. 2011

There are several possible tour dates circulating on the web. We have collected them for you here.

According to several sources, the tour would start in Israel at the end of May 2012, before moving onto other dates in the Middle East and Europe in June and July.

The US and Canada would get to see our Queen in August and September. Notice the large gap in September and October, which allows for additional US dates. Some rumours predict that there'll also be shows in South-East Asia in this period.

In November, Madonna would finally get back down under, for the first time since 1993's Girlie Show. This would also include her first ever stop in New Zealand.

Please remember that none of these tour dates have been confirmed so far. It's possible that dates are removed, replaced, changed or added. Stay tuned for more!

Madge’s Interscope deal

Source: NY Post - 14 Dec. 2011

Interscope So Madonna is back in the studio. After performing for nearly five years without a new record, her Madgesty has a three-album deal with Universal Music Group's Interscope. Madonna broke off her relationship with Warner Music Group in 2007 following a disagreement with Edgar Bronfman and signed with Live Nation for a megabucks “360 deal” that covers touring and merchandise. She'll continue to tour with Live Nation but has the deal with Interscope at a base of $1 million per album. “It's just about keeping relevance so that she can tour,” a source said, adding, “She is still in the demo phase, but the idea is to get the first album out early next year.”

Other artists signed to Jimmy Iovine 's Interscope include 50 Cent, Sean (Diddy) Combs and Lady Gaga . But Fiddy wasn't sounding that happy about having Madonna as a stable-mate. After working on new single, “Girls Gone Wild,” he tweeted on Monday, “Now Madonna's single is called Girls GONE WILD. This is some bull[bleep].”

~ We earlier had rumours about a song titled Girls Gone Wild. However, at this point we don't know if it will be a single. The first single will be Give Me All Your Love, for which the music video has been recorded last week.

Madonna's new stylist: Lourdes

Source: New York Post - 8 Dec. 2011

Madonna has a new stylist these days — her daughter Lourdes.

Just before Madge made her debut at MoMA for the Cinema Society screening of W.E. Sunday night, she had a Lourdes-ordered outfit change. Her daughter didn't like the dress and cape the Material Mom had on, so her Madgesty did a last-minute switch into a Cavalli number.

Madonna at the premiere of W.E. in NYC

At the packed Piaget-sponsored after-party at Crown, M huddled in a booth with Steven Klein and longtime manager Guy Oseary and the film's star Andrea Riseborough, and received well wishes from a crowd which included Chloe Sevigny, Jeremy Piven, Adrien Brody, Kim Cattrall, Parker Posey, Valentino and Giancarlo Giammetti, Barry Diller, Julian Schnabel, Patti Smith, Donna Karan and Glenda Bailey.

The party raged on until after midnight, at which point a building resident came down to complain about the noise — but changed her tune upon seeing Madonna in the flesh from a distance.

Madonna: My style crush on Kate Middleton

Source: Daily Telegraph - 8 Dec. 2011

The singer hailed the duchess as "a lovely girl with a great sense of style" as she confessed to an "obsession" with the Royal family.

"Her wedding dress by Alexander McQueen was very beautiful. I like her choices," said Madonna, 53.

"She's elegant and still knows how to have fun. I'm a fan of her style."

Madonna and Kate Middleton

The 29-year-old Duchess has mastered demure dressing and might seem an unusual fashion crush for a singer who favours the more daring end of the style spectrum, be it the conical bras of her Blonde Ambition tour or the lurex leotards she wore in her Confessions on a Dance Floor days.

However, Madonna has a weakness for all things British after making her home here in 2000, when she married the director Guy Ritchie.

She developed "an obsession with the Royal family starting with Queen Victoria", and became a lady of the manor by purchasing a 1,000-acre country estate in Wiltshire where she learned to hunt, shoot and fish.

She also took to wearing tweed and embraced British life with gusto, once joking that she was a "connoisseur of ales" because she spent so much time in pubs. The couple divorced in 2008.

Her fascination with the royals led to her writing and directing W.E., a biopic that casts the Duchess of Windsor in a sympathetic light.

Comparing the Duchess of Cambridge with the American divorcee whose relationship with King Edward VIII led to the 1936 abdication crisis, Madonna said: "The freedom that [Kate] has and the freedom the Royal family has now is nice and refreshing.

"It's too bad that Edward VIII didn't have the same kind of freedom back in 1937 [sic] to make his own decisions and to be the prince of the people, which Prince William is allowed to be. I like how modern they are now."

The singer was nicknamed 'Madge' by the British press and disliked the moniker until she was told it had Royal associations.

"I did hate it when they first started calling me that," she once admitted. "Then a friend told me that it was short for 'Your Majesty,' so I was, 'Okay, I like it'."

Speaking at the New York screening of W.E., Madonna explained her attraction to the Duchess of Windsor's story.

"I was always intrigued by the idea of this twice divorced American woman from Baltimore, who was not considered a conventional beauty and who grew up poor, and the most powerful man in the world who gave up his throne.

"That's an astonishing sacrifice and I wanted to understand the nature of that sacrifice," she said.

She is also a fan of the Duchess of Windsor's fashion sense. "She developed a style and stuck with it whether people were interested or not. I admire her individuality."

The film, which stars Andrea Riseborough, is released in the UK in January. Reviews have been decidedly mixed but the recreations of the Duchess's exquisite Dior and Schiaperelli dresses are expected to garner an Oscar nomination for best costume design.

Arianne Phillips, the costume designer, is also Madonna's personal stylist.

Madonna's Super Bowl show will thrill spectators, Moment Factory say

Source: Ace Showbiz - 7 Dec. 2011

Getting help from people with creative minds like Moment Factory, Madonna's live performance at the upcoming Super Bowl XLVI is promised not to disappoint. Beside collaborating with the Factory, the Material Girl will additionally be backed up by a team from award-winning group Cirque du Soleil and famed choreographer Jamie King.

Moment Factory's creative director Sakchin Besette gushed that they're "extremely excited to be working with someone as creative, talented and visionary as Madonna." He added, "[We] always look to engage audiences with something they have never seen before, and we are certain that this show will thrill spectators."

Executive producer of Moment Factory Eric Fournier added, "This is the first time we will be working with Madonna, Jamie King and the NFL and we are very excited to create the best entertainment for millions of fans who will be watching live and via broadcast."

Madonna is scheduled to perform at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. She is going to take the stage during the halftime show of the NFL championship on February 5, 2012. "It's a huge deal, my God," she said. "To be as exciting as the football game is a huge challenge. And to get your stage set up in eight minutes, another huge challenge."

This will mark the first time ever Madge sings at the show. Back in 1998, she was in talks to perform at the halftime show just in time for the promo of her then-new album Ray of Light, but the deal met a dead-end. Two years later, she was set to sing her single American Pie at the sport event, but she canceled it due to scheduling conflicts.

MTV reviews and approves Masterpiece

Source: MTV - 7 Dec. 2011

After almost 30 years of dominating the industry, it's safe to say that Madonna -- Queen of Pop -- has crafted one or two masterpieces in her day. But now, she's really gone and done it... literally. Produced by William Orbit (the man behind Madge's 1998 grand reawakening, Ray of Light), Masterpiece is the gorgeous ballad that will serve as part of the soundtrack for M's upcoming film, W.E.

"And I'm right by your side, like a thief in the night/I stand in front of a masterpiece," the living legend tenderly declares. With lyrics as poignant as Ray of Light 's Frozen and gentle instrumentation like the fragile (and underrated) album track To Have And Not To Hold, Masterpiece proves that the collaborative spark that began between Orbit and Madonna more than 10 years ago has yet to fade.

And although the final version has yet to leak in full (only a demo exists for now), Masterpiece may just be one of Madonna's best ballads in years, if not decades. Long live the Queen!

Madonna calls Super Bowl gig 'a huge challenge'

Source: Ace Showbiz - 6 Dec. 2011

NFL - Super Bowl XLVI Now that the cat is out of the bag , Madonna couldn't hide her excitement to perform at Super Bowl XLVI halftime show on February 5, 2012. The Material Girl talked about that matter when attending the screening of her upcoming movie W.E. recently.

"It's a huge deal, my God," Madge told Extra during the event which took place over the weekend at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. "To be as exciting as the football game is a huge challenge. And to get your stage set up in eight minutes, another huge challenge."

The "Masterpiece" singer is scheduled to take the stage before the sport mania at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. She is going to collaborate with a team from Cirque du Soleil, choreographer Jamie King, and artists from Moment Factory "to create a signature performance."

Madge joins past Super Bowl performers like The Who, Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, The Rolling Stones, U2 and Paul McCartney. Last year, it was Black Eyed Peas who're chosen to do the honor.

It, however, is not the first time Madge's approached to do the gig. Back in 1998, the ex-wife of movie director Guy Ritchie was in talks to perform at the halftime show just in time for the promo of her then-new album Ray of Light, but the deal met a dead-end.

Two years later, the songstress was set to sing her single American Pie at the sport event, but she canceled it due to scheduling conflicts. Back then, she expressed "sincere apologies" and "look forward to the possibility of doing something with the NFL in the future."

This year marks the fifth time Bridgestone Americas has sponsored the Super Bowl halftime show. The tire company's new brand campaign, fittingly titled "Time to Perform," will debut during the game.

The film will open for a one-week awards-qualifying run on Dec. 9 and then open nationally on Feb. 3. The new release date is intended to capitalize on her rumored Super Bowl halftime performance and new album. The Weinstein Co. is releasing the film.

Starting Dec. 10, BBC America will air "Graham Norton" less than 24 hours after the U.K. broadcast. Norton is also the star of BBC America's first original comedy, "Would You Rather?" that premieres Dec. 3. Based on British panel-style shows, Norton will ask comedians and celebrities to discuss ridiculous predicaments and moral quandaries.

Orbit produces 'Masterpiece' ballad for W.E. soundtrack

1 Dec. 2011

According to fansite Madonnarama, the title of the ballad, written for the W.E. soundtrack, has been revealed: "It's called "Masterpiece" and it has been produced by William Orbit.

The song seems to be about what it feels to love and be loved like a piece of art and how fragile this love can be.

From what we hear Madonna's voice is absolutely stunning in it, and the track is very orchestral.

The song will be featured on the soundtrack of the movie and should also be included on Madonna's upcoming album."

Some rumoured lyrics are circulating online too:

"It hurts so much to be in love with a masterpiece. Nothing is indestructable. When I first saw you all the darkness turned to light. It seems to me it's what you like. And honestly it's not fun to always be the chosen one. I'm right by your side. Like a thief in the night."
