On November 17, 1992, the best dance track on the Erotica album was released worldwide as second single. In the US charts it reached #7, in the UK #6. In Canada it dominated the charts at #1 for three weeks. It's no surprise that it got heavy airplay in clubs and became #1 on the Hot Dance / Club Play chart.
Video
Bobby Woods directed the video which shows an extravagant Madonna (without eyebrows) having a great time partying with friends (Debi Mazar, among others). It also shows some scenes from what seems to be an underground cult of some kind, which makes the video dark and trancy. It's also notable that Madonna is not lipsynching to the words of the song.
Tour
On the Girlie Show, Madonna, Niki and Donna dressed in 70s disco outfits with afro wigs and hotpants for Express Yourself, which flows into Deeper And Deeper. The dance song it is, the girls get groovy on David's Klub Mix. Then a guy who appears to be a stalker fan jumps on stage, trying to steal the show. When he rips off his shirt and then his jeans to reveal a flashy hotpants, it's clear it's one of the dancers. The others join them on stage, all in flashy hippie clothes, dito sunglasses and colourful boa's, recreating the feel of legendary club Studio 54. Then at the end of the song, it all gets out of hand... ;-)
Deeper And Deeper was certainly one of the most "re-invented" songs on the Re-Invention Tour. The dance track was successfully transformed into a jazz song, which Madonna sang first seated, while dressed in her red-and-white striped cabaret outfit. Then she jazzed around stage with Siedah and Donna. Fans had to get used to the new style of singing the lyrics (like the "mama... she made me learn this song") but it worked wonderfully well.
"Bitches, are you in my gang?!" It took another 11 years for this dance track to be heard live again, but it was worth the wait. On the Rebel Heart Tour, Madonna turns her body shop in a disco arena for what turns out to be the dance highlight of the show. She leads her dance troupe, all fashionable dressed in Prada and Miu Miu, down the catwalk for a fantastic group choreo, that has the crowd go wild. During the guitar break 4 girls - lead by Aya and Bambi - add some more groove before joining the rest of the gang.
